FreeFall
Trapped in a disturbing time, with life challenged by the unknown, this collection of paintings reflects the upside-down chaos of not knowing where this transforming world might take us. These artworks collectively speak of the same topic - of women falling figures accompanied by tumbling chairs. There is a sense of calm in the face of such turbulence, with the understanding that they must accept the changes that are taking place. The figures free-fall to an almost dream-like descent, creating a limbo of uncertainty. The chairs falling with them represent symbolic assurances of security- a safety net, a familiar connection to a comfort zone or an
ubiquitous belief.
The series began in 2020 when a pandemic held the world hostage. I was living in Kuala Lumpur when Covid began and found myself separated from my husband who was unable to come home as the international borders had closed. Discovering that this was not a singular situation and there were countless women being similarly affected, it compelled me to start painting this Free-fall series. The collection developed into an ongoing theme when I realised that the pandemic only further exacerbated the pre existing state
of many minds - already dealing with the pressures and pace of everyday life and the fear of being unable to cope with its demanding attention.
As the world continued to change, my life did too. Following a knee
replacement surgery and unable to stand for lengthy periods, I turned to painting smaller works. Continuing the same free fall theme, I created collages. This was to further emphasise the disorderly ongoing attempts to piece things together into a harmonious picture.
Free fall portrays a safe space from the disarray in our lives.
